Between the garden, the kitchen and the table, there’s a rhythm here that only Calabria can teach. In our outdoor kitchen near Tropea, you’ll join a hands on culinary class where Calabrian cooking is taught as it’s meant to be: simple, local and full of heart.

Set in the hills just outside Tropea, this immersive cooking experience invites you to slow down, cook outdoors, and feel part of the rhythm of Calabrian life. Surrounded by gardens, vineyards and olive groves, you will spend time in the company of a small and intimate group of guests, preparing traditional dishes and sharing a meal beneath the vines.

Unlike shorter tourist classes, our Calabrian Cooking Class in Tropea is a full countryside experience. We prepare seven to eight traditional dishes, enjoy generous pours of local red and white wines during the cooking, and gather for a long table meal beneath a pergola of grapevines. Guests often describe it as a sublime experience, not just a lesson in food but a celebration of Calabria itself.

Our cooking class combines hands-on cooking with the warmth and conviviality of Southern Italian life. From antipasti and wine enjoyed while cooking to handmade pasta, seafood, meats, seasonal vegetables, dessert and homemade liqueurs, it is designed to showcase the abundance of Calabrian cuisine in its most authentic setting.

Cooking in the Calabrian Countryside

The class takes place just outside Tropea in the countryside, where vineyards, olive groves, fruit trees and gardens provide many of the ingredients used during the experience. Cooking is done in a rustic open-air kitchen, shaded and surrounded by nature. The setting itself, generous and deeply tied to the land, creates the perfect backdrop for this immersive culinary experience.

Cooking with Calabrian Traditions

Together we prepare a variety of traditional Calabrian dishes including fresh seafood caught along the coast, meats from the surrounding hills, seasonal vegetables from the garden and the region’s signature pasta, fileja, rolled by hand and served with a selection of sauces. Each dish reflects centuries of tradition passed down through generations and rooted in Calabria’s unique terroir.

The class is guided but relaxed, giving everyone the chance to cook, learn and taste at their own pace. Throughout the experience, guests enjoy generous pours of local wines accompanied by farm antipasti such as salami, cheeses and olives, making the cooking itself as convivial as the dining.

Exploring the Farm and Its Produce

During the experience, our hosts Laura and Daniele welcome guests on a guided walk through the property, where you can see seasonal vegetables growing in the gardens, vineyards climbing the hills and olive trees that yield the oil used in the class. Fruit trees are scattered across the land, adding to the sense of abundance. The property also produces its own salami, honey and olive oil, connecting each part of the experience to its source.

A Generous Countryside Table Beneath the Vines

When the cooking is complete, we sit at a countryside table beneath a pergola of grapevines, where the dishes prepared together are served in abundance, including handmade pasta dishes, seafood, meats and seasonal vegetable creations. The meal is unhurried, accompanied by DOC wines of Calabria and followed by Laura’s homemade dessert and her homemade liqueurs. Guests often remark that this moment, sitting under the vines and tasting the results of the experience while the wine continues to flow, is the highlight of their time in Tropea.
