Calabria
Our exclusive eight-day gastronomical tour is
set in Calabria, the beautiful region situated in the southernmost tip of the
Italian peninsula. Located between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas, the unique
topography of this area encompasses everything from rugged mountain ranges to
picturesque coastal villages.
Calabria - often overlooked by large touring
companies - offers unparalleled beaches, rustic landscapes and distinctive
cuisine honed over thousands of years. On your 8 Days in Calabria tour, you
will experience it all...
Capo
Vaticano
Each day of this engaging tour begins and
ends in Capo Vaticano, the site of your restful resort. This scenic
coastal town will appeal to guests who appreciate the tranquility of a
virtually undiscovered vacation destination.
Nestled between the Gulf of Lamenzia and the
Gulf of Gioia, this small village has some of the most beautiful and unspoiled
beaches in all of Italy. Nicknamed Costa Degli Dei - Coast of the Gods - Capo
Vaticano features a pictorial coast with white granite cliffs dropping off into
the turquoise sea below. The sparkling creeks and mysterious coves add beauty
and intrigue to this quiet town.
Tropea
Along the Tyrrhenian coast lies the stunning
medieval town of Tropea, the most famous tourist stop in all of Calabria. Here
you will find shopping, the best beach in Italy and breathtaking views from
dramatic promontories.
Tropea is an ancient town that features
houses built right into the stone cliffs. As you walk through the town that
looms above the beach, you will pass timeless cathedrals, noble mansions and
even catch a glimpse of the church of Santa Maria Della Isola situated on an
outcrop above the sea. This historic chapel was dedicated to all seafarers and
sits perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the water.
During your boat trips on the 8 Days in
Calabria tour, you will always be able to view the magnificent scenery of
Tropea from the the sea. You can even see the houses embedded in the
cliffs.
Pizzo
Calabro
Pizzo Calabro is a prosperous fishing
center. This coastal village produces some of the most unique gelato flavors in
the region.
As you amble through the narrow lanes and
cobblestone streets, take in the charming architecture of the city. Continue on
to the lower end of the village where you will see the boat landings where
ancient pirates once pilfered from local sailors. And your visit to Pizzo
Calabro won't be complete without a visit to the Chiesetta di Piedigrotta - a
sanctuary carved into the grotto on the beach below. This magnificent chancel
features life-sized sculptures of people bowed in prayer.
Scilla
The courtly Ruffo Castle towers above the
straits of Messina overlooking peaceful Scilla. The town is divided into two
parts. The first is Chianalea - an exquisite fishing village where a tight row
of pastel huts hug the coast. The second part is downtown Scilla. While there,
visit the 17th-century sacred church Dello Spirito Santo. Bask in the sights
and sounds heavily influenced by centuries-old architecture, including
monumental fountains and quaint shops. Stand in the Marina Grande and gaze out
over the crystal clear sea toward Sicily.
Like most coastal towns, Scilla's culinary
traditions are built on a foundation of seafood. Locals in this charming town
still fish for swordfish in the same type of boats used for generations, which
you can see for yourself on the tour.
Strongoli
and The Ceraudo Estate
Your road trip to the lovely town of
Strongoli will take you toward the dazzling Ionian coast. This small town on
the eastern shore of Calabria is in the provincial capital of Crotone.
This trip will be centered around the
renowned farm and vineyards of legendary wine connoisseur, Roberto Ceraudo. A
producer of fine wines and internationally acclaimed olive oils, Ceraudo will
personally lead you on a tour of his magnificent property.
The sprawling Ceraudo Estate - home to
verdant vineyards, ancient olive groves and fragrant orange gardens - sits on a
lush hill near the Ionian Sea. The Ceraudo family opened their stately farm to
visitors after transforming the old-fashioned workers' lodgings into
comfortable accommodations for fortunate guests.
The
Aeolean Islands of Sicily
The seven volcanic Aeolean Islands of Sicily
are just a few miles off the northern coast of Sicily. These islands are quite
rugged with deep caverns, steep cliffs and incomparable views.
The best part about your trip to the Aeolean
Islands is your mode of transportation. Roberto Di Marco will take you on a
coastal tour around the amazing islands in his private yacht. From the luxury
of the boat, you can take in scenes of Panerea, a very popular tourist island,
or the activity of the live volcano on the island of Stromboli.
In addition to volcanoes, these islands are
home to sandy beaches, incredible fishing and exquisite architecture - many
houses are constructed from local lava and pumice stone. The rocky shorelines
cultivate an incredible variety of aquatic flora and fauna, making these
islands both vibrant and inviting.
